Best of 2009 12-17-09
![]() December 17, 2009 07:36 AM PST
First off, my apologies for the delay in posting the "Best of 2009" podcast. A bad case of bronchitis really took the wind out of my sails (and my lungs for that matter.) Since I am already so late in posting this episode, I am going to forgo my typical "Best of the Best" editorial and just let the music speak for itself. For those of you that are regular listeners here at the Chill with The Chola podcast, you know that the "Best of" shows are a culmination, and celebration, of a year's worth of great music. For some of you that may just be joining us, the "Best Of" shows are a great way to get an idea of what this podcast is all about. So, be sure to check out the Best of 2008 and the Best of 2007 as well. Each of the artists in this month's podcast are excellent. As always, I encourage you to seek them out, learn about them, listen to their music, and support them by purchasing their music. Here are the Best of 2009...

This month I decided it was time for me to explore one of my favorite styles of ambient music... "SPACE MUSIC." Now I know that my "Space Traveler Series" touches on the spacey side of ambient music, however, those episodes are still very much tempo driven. This month's downtempo podcast is comprised of music all but devoid of true tempo. The songs are much more freeform for the most part, only really driving tempos using arpeggiators or rhythmic sound. Space Music creates massive soundcapes that invoke mental imagery of far away worlds, stars, and nebulae. I have been a fan of Space Music since I was a child. I think the first time I ever heard this style of music was during a car ride home from the beach while listening to "Hearts of Space" on NPR... I was fascinated with it. I have tinkered with my own space music throughout the years and decided to include an original, improvisational piece of music that I created and recorded on the fly for this podcast. Here is a link to download my song free of charge... Download Here. While I am certainly an amateur at producing this wonderful music, I must say that it is an amazing experience to sit down to a keyboard and create it on the fly. Surrounded by LED's, LCD's, blinky lights, sliders, knobs... it almost feels as if you are piloting your own spacecraft through a universe of sound that you are creating with your own creative mind. I have a real appreciation for just how complicated it is to control so many timbers, morphing between sounds, tempos (or lack thereof,) keys... worlds... all the while keeping it all together, in a freeform flow of consciousness. Composers like Serrie, Gulan, Brennan, etc are true masters of this craft. I invite you to put on a pair of headphones, turn off the lights, lay down, hit play... and drift away in to a wonderful universe of sound. Don't worry, you will be back home in a little over 80 minutes. Here is this month's tracklist... 01. Altus- For All Time Are you a Facebook user? I just wanted to share a progressive house mix that I recently put together. It is a follow up to the mix that I recorded back in August entitled "Deep on the Offbeat." While the music is not exactly "downtempo," I thought that some of you may enjoy listening to it. I have posted a copy on my Soundcloud page. Enjoy! Listen/ Download Here...

Oh yaaaaa! The drink of the day... it is something I am looking so forward to. For those of you that have ever been on a cruise, you completely understand how fun the "drink of the day" can be, and this month's downtempo podcast is inspired by just that. You see, I have an upcoming vacation that I am excited about. I am not taking a cruise (this time) but, we are going to carry over that wonderful idea to our trip in to unspoiled Florida. Good scenery, good fun, good drinks, and good company... who could ask for more? Well I guess me, because a good soundtrack to listen to while sipping the drink of the day is always a good idea. That is what this month's set is all about. It is leisure time! You are going to find a menagerie of music styles in this month's podcast. Jazz, Salsa, Bossanova (you know I love the bossas,) downtempo, chillout, funk... it is quite diverse. Is it cocktail hour yet? Here is this month's tracklist... 01. Nickodemus- Conmigo ft. This month is a follow up of sorts to my "August in the City" downtempo podcast from 2008. My girlfriend and I had tons of fun over the last year while she lived downtown . However, we are enjoying ourselves even more now that we live together out in the suburbs. The pace is a bit slower, and I have to say... that is right up my alley! You will find some great chillout, downtempo, samba, bossa, and even a pretty funky MJ remix in this month's podcast. Enjoy! Here is this month's tracklist...

This month's podcast is a continuation of my "Space Traveler" series and is once again dedicated to the folks over at Lounge Radio. I try to add an episode to this series every year and I figured it was time to slow things down, and, bring out the deeper side of downtempo for this month's show. I took a trip to Berlin in July and had an amazing time. I had the opportunity to visit a few clubs, lounges, and bars. It really seems that Germans love their Minimal Electronica. I was pretty surprised just how much that trip influenced my song selection this month. Almost inadvertently I found myself seeking out deeper, minimal types of music to mix along with ambient and chill out tunes. I am quite pleased with what came about from that subconscious decision. After listening to the complete episode, I am quite sure that Berlin has forever left its mark in my heart. This month's chillout podcast includes a wonderful selection of deeper chillout music, ambient, and what do you know... even a few minimal tunes. Here is this month's tracklist...

Datapusher was good enough to send over another excellent Drum and Bass mix just in time for the weekend. The mix is full of smoothed out DNB on the liquid tip... super melodic, dreamy, spaced out... AWESOME! This might be my favorite mix that he has sent over thus far. Be sure to check out Datapusher's podcast at http://datapusher.podomatic.com. He has informed me that he has quite a few new episodes on the way. From Breaks, to old-school, to DNB... he'll have you covered. Here is the tracklist...

Okay, it is time to bring things back home and slow the tempo down some again. This month I bring us "Back to The Lounge" with some great samba, bossanova, some awesome covers, and overall, just a loungey feel. Pour a martini and take a load off, it is time to chill out. I am planning a trip to Berlin in the very near future and would love some recommendations of lounges, bars, clubs, and record stores to visit with a jazz, downtempo, or lounge, influence. If any of my listeners from Germany have some insight, please email me at chola @ podomatic.com. Thanks! Here is this month's tracklist...

About TheI have been an off and on musician for years and I have recently started Digital DJ'ing. Once upon a time I had dreams of being a profesional Electronic musician but, with time and age, that faded. I have moved away from the music business and am very happy with my career in Information Technology. I have recently started producing music and mixing again, but this time around, I am doing it for enjoyment, not profit.
